Neurohormonal Therapies
Oxytocin
Oxytocin is a naturally occurring neurohormone that plays a role in bonding, attachment, and sexual behavior. Oxytocin works systemically to potentially influence central pathways involved in sexual arousal and desire. Oxytocin is generally well-tolerated with minimal side effects.
Bremelanotide
Bremelanotide is an FDA-approved treatment specifically indicated for acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women. It represents a novel approach to treating low sexual desire that causes distress. Bremelanotide is typically 45 minutes before anticipated sexual activity. Most common side effects are nausea, flushing and headache.
